Clark & Young

We may as well change the firm name to "Chase J. Young." It is the same amount of letters and has some sort of familiarity to it. Call me crazy, but when someone says or I hear the words, "Chase J. Young," I tend to pay attention. Now, when I hear "Clark & Young," my mind wanders.

Today we talked about the Maturity Continuum and Habits 1-3. We also discussed how our maturity might impact listening, relationships and parenting.

We showed "Dances with Wolves" and talked about the Native American practice of using a talking stick for more active listening.

Your blog post should talk about at least two key principles and how they could apply in your life. You should also teach them to someone close to you within the first 24 hours of class. If you teach before you post, you should include something about the teaching experience in your post. If you teach after your post, go back in and edit your post to add what resulted from teaching the principles from class.

Please remember--Post on your blog, then add a coment to this blog which has the link to your blog. Make your comment an overview, in 5 lines or less, of your blog--one that will attract others to visit your blog!

If you're still having problems blogging, go to "www.google.com" and enter "how to blog" or go to "www.blogger.com" and go through the items in the help menu/tutorial so you can do it--or go to the library and ask one of the roving computer TA's in one of the student-use computers how to get it done!

Your posts will now be due no later than 3 pm the night before class so that others will have time to read your blog and comment on it!

Then post your comments to at least two other blogs.

New Blogging (technology)

As the overseers of technology we have devised a better way to track, post, and reply to blogs. We also propose a better way to communicate and work within our own columns. First establish a team leader. This leader will post a blog related to the activities of the last class period. They will post it on their own blog as well as publish it on Br. Adams blog. Each of the other members of the group will post a response to this posting. This will provide a steady flow of information within each discipline.
Second, all teams must designate a liaison to the other teams. This leader will post a response to the team they are responsible over. This will enhance communications between the respective disciplines. Please post a response or email me ( sivart32@gmail.com ) with any questions.

Capital Group

We need to know what everyone needs, so that we have reasons for asking for money. The more detailed your group can analysis what it needs the better we will be able to ask for it and monitor how money is being spent.

We need to have potentially one other person (probably from the People’s Group) since they are the largest in the class to join the Capital’s group we only have 3 people total and myself (Scott) am also part of the other class, so it is important to have another person so the work load can be balanced better.

As towards a name for our firm I am ok with Clark & Young, referring to President Clark and BYU-I.

Homework: Party Time!

We feel that it is very important to also get to know eachother off the "work site." So, each group needs to get together sometime (you can choose when) and just hang out.

Requirements:
1. You must be together for at least an hour. You can stay longer if you want, but it's got to be at least an hour.
2. You can't talk about "work." That means you're not allowed to talk about school, especially Intro to Org. You can get together and talk about it later if you want.

There are lots of things you can do- it's up to you! Bowling, movies, games... the sky is the limit. After the activity, talk about it in your blog and what you did and what you thought!

We will also be doing a couple of class parties, so if you have anything that you'd like to do, let us know!

Happy Groundhog Day! Since he didn't see his shadow, spring's coming early or will it in Rexburg?

Today we'll be reminded that any time you start a new team or venture (or any time you add new members to a team) you begin back with the following natural order of group progression:

1. Forming, 2. Storming, 3. Norming, 4. Performing, 5. Adjourning

COMM 250

1. Great "act rather than be acted upon" when I came to class from the All-employee meeting with President Clark, class was already underway, with the prayer and scripture done and Peer-to-Peer teaching being done between fellow students in a discussion about improving our blogging, etc. Way to go, "Clark & Young!"

2. Blogging--as I understand it, the decision, with the Technology group leading implementation, was to have each of 8 discipline guides, (5 Functional Areas) People, Market, Technology, Capital, Organization, (3 Practice Areas) Strategy, Operations and Change, posting every day about key insights and activities in their 7 Habits, Mission, Expectations, Group Representatives
3. I was reminded in the All-employee meeting about the opportunity I will take before each and every class to pray that our time may be for your best benefit. In thinking how we're rethinking education here and how that continues to stretch us all, I also commit to praying that collectively--and individually--we will all be blessed with the additional increasing capacity we will need as we strive to learn "line upon line, precept upon precept." I'm reminded of the scripture--"teach ye (one another) diligently, and my grace shall attend you..." http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/88/78#78 As we stretch ourselves and strive--for our families and other life's work--to "learn at the speed of change" in organizations, the economy and the world, we will find that His grace is sufficient after we have done all we can do!

4. Eric lead us in a discussion of making one member each of each of the 5 functional areas the liason to the four other areas to facilitate communication. We need to be thinking about that and get back to him.

5. Scott, Eric, and now possibly David are going to be attending both 250 and 455. Some students from 455 may soon be attending 250. If we have one of them as a group facilitator for 250 in each functional area, it should help with communication and common expectations.

6. We discussed having our class be primarily focused on founding, developing and operating "Clark & Young" with a secondary focus on external client service to our large, non-profit Client A, and our smaller, for-profit Client B. Comm 455 would have the opposite approach. We discussed how for external client service Comm 250 would fill the roles of: Analyst, Consultant and Senior Consultant--and that Comm 455 would fulfill the roles of Manager, Senior Manager, and Partner. We mentioned the need for our Market group to evaluate the brand/corporate identity "Clark & Young" to see if we move ahead with it or rebrand ourselves.

7. We spent 10 minutes talking about Stephen Covey's "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" outlining for the first time the maturity continuum and each of the 7 Habits. We applied them to Org Comm as "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective ORGANIZATIONS." http://www.franklincovey.com

I stepped in because a student had expressed they were confused about where we were headed with the class--and often that which is most personal is most general. I believe today we took a big step forward in helping define our future! Thanks for how proactive you are all becoming!
